Description:

IC 1848 is the name-giving, small open star cluster (centre) in this detailed view of the much larger emission nebula.
W5 is one of the most famous radio sources within the nebula, which has an apparent diameter in the sky of 4 full moons and is located at a distance of about 7500 light-years from our solar system in the Perseus arm of the Milky Way in the constellation of Cassiopeia. As in other star formation areas, such as the Orion Nebula or the Carinan Nebula, there are huge cavities in the W5, created by radiation and the star winds of the largest stars in this region.
According to the theory of triggered star formation, the gas is compressed at the edge of these cavities, triggering a chain of successive star formation in the nebula. The further away from the shock front from the centre there are new young stars, older stars are closer to the centre, younger ones further out.
